Lowering of the Flag Notification – Kho, Picot, Steinberg, Pico

The BC Flag (Main Mall and Agronomy Road) is lowered on Friday, August 19, 2011, to mark the passing of the following UBC Community Members.

Staff

Kho, Jennifer, passed away unexpectedly on August 5, 2011, and was the finance Clerk in the History Department at the time of her passing. She began working at UBC in October 1993, at the Center for Human Settlements. In 1996, she transferred to the History Department. The Burial Service was private. Members of the UBC Community who wish to pass condolences to Jennifer’s family are asked to contact Jocelyn Smith, smith@mail.arts.ubc.ca before September 1, 2011.

Picot, Mary, passed away on July 29, 2011. Mary worked for the UBC Bookstore for 22 years, and continued to work in the Bookstore for the used book wholesaler periodically after she had retired. A service was held on August 4, 2011. In lieu of flowers, a donation to either the Delta Hospice Society or the BC Cancer Foundation would be appreciated.

Faculty

Steinberg, Professor Emeritus Moses Wolfe, passed away on April 30, 2011 (notification received August 15, 2011). In 1946, Professor Steinberg joined the Department of English. In his 52 years at UBC, he was honoured twice as UBC Master Teacher (1971 & 1972). He served on numerous university committees including the Senate, the Board of Governors, and was an executive member of the Faculty Association. He retired in 1983, and continued to work through distance Education at UBC. In honour of his memory, the Professor Mo Steinberg English Literature Award and a fund to support Jewish day schools in Vancouver has been established.

Pico, Richard, a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Providence Health Care since 2007, passed away on July 26, 2011.  For more information please contact the Faculty of Medicine.
