Dr. Charles Bourne and Palmer Nerland

The BC Flag (Main Mall and Agronomy Road) will be lowered today, Wednesday, June 27, 2012 to mark the passing of:

Dr. Charles Bourne passed away on Monday, June 25th, 2012. Dr. Bourne joined the Faculty of Law in 1950 as an associate professor and then became a full professor. Bourne was a member of the UBC Senate and served as an advisor to the President with responsibility for relations between the University and the Faculty Association (1975-1986). Bourne specialized in administrative, constitutional, and international law, with particular emphasis on international drainage basins and environmental protection. He retired from UBC as Professor Emeritus in 1986 and in 1993, he received an honorary degree from UBC. For obituary information, check the Vancouver Sun or the Globe and Mail in the following days.

Palmer (Paul) Maynard Nerland passed away on May 29th, 2012. Paul was a long-serving staff member and was inducted into the 25 Year Club in 1986. Paul joined the Faculty of Medicine at UBC in 1961 as the Director of Finance, in the Department of Continuing Medical Education. He was instrumental in establishing the funding system for Family Medicine and establishing Free Medical Clinics under the auspices of the Canada Health Act. He was considered an expert in Healthcare Delivery Systems and frequently lectured on the topic at UBC. Obituary information can be found here.
