Sally Rogow and George Gorelik

The BC Flag (Main Mall & Agronomy) will be lowered tomorrow, Friday January 4, 2013 to mark the passing of Dr. Sally Rogow and Mr. George Gorelik.

Rogow, Sally – Professor Emerita, Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education, passed away on December 21, 2012.

Pioneered teacher preparation programs in the area of visual impairment across Canada.  On faculty at UBC from 1971-1995, she directed the Diploma (which later became the Master’s) Program preparing teachers to work with blind, visually impaired and multi-handicapped youth at the University of British Columbia (UBC).  Her studies significantly expanded our understanding of language development and literacy in children with disabilities.

In 2009, she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Canadian Vision Teachers Conference and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for Leaders and Legends of the Blindness Field in 2011. Her photograph and citation can be found at: http://www.aph.org/hall/bios/rogow.html

Gorelik, George – Sauder alumnus and Associate Professor Emeritus of Accounting,  passed away on December 22, 2012 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

George worked as CGA-BC’s first full-time employee and went on to become its president in 1976. He earned his CGA certification and subsequently an MBA from UBC in 1960. In 1963 he became a lecturer in UBC’s Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration.  Upon his retirement in 1991, the Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration honoured him with an annual prize in his name. The George Gorelik Prize is awarded to the student obtaining the highest standing in financial accounting. In 2008,  CGA-Canada named him one of Canada’s top 100 CGAs of the past 100 years.

 Funeral services were held at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver on Friday, December 28. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
