Professor Emeritus  John C. Brown, FRSC, passed away on October 15, 2016Professor Brown joined the Physiology Department in 1965 as an Assistant Professor, and rose to full Professor by 1970. In 1986, he formed, and became Director, of the MRC Regulatory Peptide Group. During his tenure at UBC he published ~200 manuscripts and was invited to give more than 100 research lectures all around the world. He was a pioneer in the field of gastrointestinal endocrinology, his research leading to the development of a new class of drugs for diabetes that are used to treat millions of patients around the world.

Professor Brown’s many scientific accomplishments earned him numerous citations, prestigious awards and honorary professorships. Professor Brown was highly sought after in the biotechnology sector and co-founded Quadra Logic Technologies Ltd. where he served as Director and Vice President of R&D for 11 years. He also co-founded and was a Director of ImmGenics and EnGene. He was very generous with his time conducting public service for many health and charitable organizations. He was a member of the Chancellor’s Circle. His contribution to UBC resulted in the establishment of the Anne and John Brown Fellowship in Diabetes and Obesity Related Research.
