Background

UBC’s Vancouver campus sits on the traditional, ancestral, unceded territory of the Musqueam people. UBC and the Musqueam Indian Band have a long history of partnership including a long standing working relationship with the Museum of Anthropology, that was strengthened in recent years with the signing of a historic Musqueam Memorandum of Affiliation in 2006.

Other collaborative projects include:

  • Bilingual signs providing alternate street names in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ Indigenous language unveiled April 2018
  • A Musqueam welcome pole or qeqən, carved by Musqueam artist Brent Sparrow Jr. and dedicated in April 2016 to mark the hundred-year anniversary of UBC
  • The Bridge Through Sports program, aims to use sport as a mechanism to empower Aboriginal youth in lifelong learning and make UBC more accessible to Aboriginal youth and their families
  • Musqueam Youth Program for ages 12-18
  • Musqueam 101, is a weekly community meal and speaker series to build greater cross-cultural understanding and awareness of Musqueam’s culture and historical legacy
  • The Musqueam Language Program, a sequence of 6 UBC-accredited courses in hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓, the traditional Coast Salish language of this territory, developed and co-taught in collaboration with Musqueam community members. The hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language courses (UBC FNEL 101, 102, 201, 202, 301, 302) and Musqueam 101 are hosted in the Musqueam community.
  • The House Post of qiyǝplenǝxʷ (‘Capilano’) by Musqueam artist Brent Sparrow Jr., recognizing the relationship between the Allard School of Law and the Musqueam people
