The BC flagpole is moving!

The BC flagpole is moving to a more central location on campus as part of long-term planning for the university.

On February 24, we are relocating the flagpole from Main Mall and Agronomy Road to a new location in the heart of the campus – in between Brock Hall and the old SUB where it will join the UBC flagpole.

In the next 2-3 years we anticipate that these individual flagpoles will be replaced with a set of flagpoles at the top of Student Union Boulevard in order to enhance this important entry into campus.

What will be in its place?

UBC has partnered with a private donor to commission the carving of a totem pole that recognizes the complex aspects of reconciliation related to Canadian Indian residential schools. This 55-foot cedar pole has been carved by James Hart, Haida master carver and hereditary chief and will be raised April 1, 2017 at the intersection of Main Mall and Agronomy, on the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people.

All are invited to come witness this historic event. For more information, please visit theĀ Reconciliation Pole webpage.
