HUGHES, Professor Gilbert C. III

HUGHES, Professor Gilbert C. III, Professor Emeritus of Botany (1998) passed away Sunday, October 10, 2010. Gilbert spent 35 years of his professional life as a Marine Mycologist in the Department of Botany. For details of the time and place of his celebration of life, please contact the family. A Memorial Service is to be held Tuesday 19 October at the Centre for Peace, 1825 West 16th Ave at 2pm.

WILSON, Dr Robert (Bob) George

WILSON, Dr Robert (Bob) George passed on October 8, 2010. After service in WW II, he returned to the University of British Columbia completing a BA (Honors in Bacteriology and Preventive Medicine) From 1954 – 1969, he served as Assistant and Executive Secretary for the British Columbia Medical Association and 1971 -1976, he was an Instructor and Assistant Professor, Department of Healthcare and Epidemiology, University of British Columbia. In 1969 he joined the Faculty of Medicine at UBC full-time and was instrumental in establishing the Family Practice Teaching Program at VGH and UBC. He was a Founding and Life Member of the College of Family Physicians of Canada. In 1978 he was appointed Senior Lecturer, Family Medicine University of Ottawa. From 1976 – 1981, he was the Secretary General of the Canadian Medical Association in Ottawa. In 1982, he returned to clinical practice in Kamloops, BC with the Medical Services Division, Ministry of Health, for the Province of BC, retiring from clinical medicine in 1987. The family would ask that any correspondence for Marjorie Wilson be sent to Ms Kate Lucyk – Bowen, 12634 – 28th Avenue, Surrey, BC V4A 2P3.

YOUNG, Lawrence

YOUNG, Lawrence, Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering (1991) passed away on September 22, 2010. Dr. Young began his career in Canada at the National Research Council in Ottawa and later moved to Vancouver in 1955 having been hired by the BC Research Council. In early 1970 he joined the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at UBC and remained until retirement in 1990. Dr. Young was considered a world expert in the area of anodic oxides and was named a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Fellow of the International Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Friends and colleagues wishing to make memorial donations are encouraged to support the BC Cancer Foundation.
