Flag Lowering: Dr. David Lam, Dr. David Jones and Lois Carrier

The BC Flag (Main Mall & Agronomy) will be lowered today, Tuesday November 23, 2010 to mark the passing of Dr. David Lam, Dr. David Jones and Lois Carrier.

LAM, Dr. David C.V.O., O.C., O.B.C.

Former Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia (1988 -95) has passed away Monday 22 November, 2010 . Dr. Lam emigrated from Hong Kong in 1967 and to assist him with his future, David took courses at UBC. In 1984, the Lams acknowledged their appreciation for UBC’s role in their lives by providing unprecedented support from an individual to the Faculty of Commerce to create the David Lam Library. At the library’s opening David said, “It is of no small significance to me that this library will serve many immigrants to this great country who will study at this outstanding university”.
The David Lam Management Research Centre was made possible through a donation from David and Dorothy in 1992. They also supported the David Lam Chair in Multicultural Education, the Dorothy Lam Chair in Special Education , and the David C. Lam Asian Garden at the Botanical Garden. He received a Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree (1987)
A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Richmond Funeral Home, 8420 Cambie Road, in Richmond.

JONES, Dr. David R., FRSC, CM.

UBC Killam Research Scholar, University Killam Professor and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Zoology, passed away on the 19th November, 2010. In 1969, he accepted a faculty position at UBC where he continued until his retirement in 2005. David received many prestigious awards throughout his career, including two Killam Research Fellowships and a Killam Research Prize; he was awarded the Fry Medal by the Canadian Society of Zoologists and the Flavelle Medal of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2003 David became a Member of The Order of Canada. No date has yet been set for a celebration of his life.

CARRIER, Lois Jacqueline

Passed away on November 5, 2010 Lois worked as a Reference Librarian, Humanities & Social Sciences Division at UBC from 1966 until her retirement in 1988. A Memorial Celebration will be held on Friday, November 19, at 2:00pm at Canadian Memorial United Church at 15th and Burrard St. Vancouver.
