Lowering the Flag Notification – Abigail M. Scott

The BC Flag (Main Mall and Agronomy Road) is lowered today Thursday, June 23, 2011, to mark the passing of Abigail M. Scott.

SCOTT, Abigail, passed away on June 18, 2011, in Indiana while visiting home during her summer holidays. Abigail entered the MA program in Linguistics at UBC in September, 2008, after completing a BA at Indiana University. At the end of her first year at UBC, she transferred into the PhD program. Abigail was particularly interested in field research, and spent a summer as a research assistant in Namibia working on Mangetti Dune !Xung. She presented her joint research there at the “Interspeech 2009” conference in Brighton, UK, co-authoring a paper that appeared in the conference proceedings. At UBC, Abigail’s research was supported by a University Graduate Fellowship and by a prestigious Beinecke Scholarship. In addition to her research, Abigail was known as a dedicated Teaching Assistant.

Abigail will be missed at UBC by friends, fellow students, staff and faculty both in the Department of Linguistics and in the broader UBC community.
