The BC Flag (Main Mall and Agronomy Road) is lowered today Friday, June 24, 2011, to mark the passing of Dr. Arsenio Pacheco-Ransanz.
PACHECO-RANSANZ, Arsenio, Professor Emeritus of Spanish, passed away on 17 June, 2011. He was appointed to UBC as an Associate Professor of Spanish in 1970 and retired at the rank of Professor in 1997.
Dr. Pacheco was a Professor in the former Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies and a highly regarded scholar in the fields of Catalan Literature, Medieval Spanish Literature, and the Spanish novel of the Golden Age.
A former President of the Canadian Association of Hispanists and of the North American Catalan Society, Dr. Pacheco was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1981 and was awarded a Killam Senior Fellowship in 1983-84.
A funeral service will take place on Saturday, June 25, 11am, at the Immaculate Conception Church, located at 3745 West 28th Avenue, Vancouver.
