The BC Flag (Main Mall and Agronomy Road) will be lowered today, Wednesday, January 4, 2012, to recognize the passing of Dr. Ruth Ethel McConnell who passed away on December 16, 2011, at the age of 96.
Dr. Ruth McConnell, Professor Emerita of English, received her B.A. and M.A. Degrees from UBC before she joined the UBC Department of Language and Education in 1958 where she remained until her retirement in 1980.
Dr. McConnell served on the UBC Senate and Senior Appointments Committee in addition to holding many leadership roles in the department, and faculty. Ruth, along with then acting Dean of Education, founded the UBC Compositions Workshops which developed new ways of teaching written composition in the classroom.
A Celebration of life will be held at Westminster House at 1653 140 Street, Surrey, B.C., January 8, 2012, at 2:00 p.m.
