The BC Flag (Main Mall and Agronomy Road) will be lowered today, Wednesday February 8, 2012, in memory of Dr. Cyril V. Finnegan Jr. Dr. Finnegan passed away in Vancouver on Monday, January 30, 2012.
Dr. Finnegan began his career at UBC in 1958 in Biology. In 1969, he joined the football coaching staff at UBC and served as defensive line coach under the legendary Frank Gnup until 1973. In 1972, Dr. Finnegan joined the administration as assistant Dean of Science. Before his tenure was over, he would be Associate Dean (1972-1979), Dean of Science (1979-1985), and Associate Vice-President, Academic (1985-1988).
In 1988, Dr. Finnegan retired, although he remained a professor emeritus and maintained an office at UBC until he was 75.
At Dr. Finnegan’s request, there is no funeral service. The family will have a private wake to celebrate his life. He would ask to be remembered by simple singular acts of helpfulness towards the next less fortunate person you meet. Everyone is invited to hoist a glass of Jameson in Dr. Finnegan’ memory.
