The BC Flag (Main Mall and Agronomy Road) will be lowered on Monday, January 27, in memory of Professor Emeritus Michael S. Batts, FRSC, who passed away on January 16, 2014.
Michael Batts first joined UBC’s Department of German Studies in 1959, and was Department Head from 1968 to 1980. Under his leadership, the Department became recognized as one of the most significant in Canada. He retired in 1991, but remained active on campus for many years.
The Department of Central, Eastern and Northern European Studies will hold an event in his honour at the end of the current teaching term.
