Professor Emeritus James Oliver Caswell passed away on February 5, 2016. Dr. Caswell came to UBC’s Department of Fine Arts in 1971, serving as Head from 1981 to 1997, retiring from the Department of Art History, Visual Art & Theory in 2002, after serving another term as Head from 2001. Dr. Caswell’s area of specialization was the Buddhist cave art at Dunhuang and Yungang. Dr. Caswell was proud of his heritage as a member of the Chippewa White Earth Nation.
