The BC Flag (Main Mall and Agronomy Road) will be lowered on Friday, June 10, 2016 in memory of Professor Emeritus Charles E. Slonecker, who passed away on June 9, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dr. Slonecker joined the Anatomy Department in 1968, serving as Head from 1984 to 1995. His accomplishments in his fields of research were greatly respected by his peers and he was a highly recognized teacher, receiving a Teaching Award from both the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry, as well as numerous other professional and association awards.

In 1990, he assumed the position as Director of Ceremonies, a role he maintained until his retirement in 2003.  He also served for two years as Acting Vice President, External Affairs in the mid-1990s.  His contributions on campus were many and varied; including being a long-time faculty rep on Senate, a member of numerous President’s Advisory Committees, Senior volunteer with the UBC Development Office, Alumni Association Board and UBC United Way Campaign, not to mention his various roles on external community Boards such as Bard on the Beach, PAL, etc.  Even after his retirement, he continued to chair the Student Discipline Committee and participate in other committees.  He was the recipient of the President’s Service Award for Excellence in 2001 and made an Honorary Alumnus of UBC the same year.
