The BC and UBC flags (at the North Plaza of the Life Building (the Old SUB) will be lowered on Friday, September 14, in remembrance.
Professor Emeritus H. Alan C. Cairns, O.C. passed away on August 27, 2018. Dr. Cairns was first appointed to UBC’s Department of Political Science in 1960, heading the department from 1973 to 1980, and retiring in 1995. Dr. Cairns was recognized as one of Canada’s leading political scientists. His extensive work profoundly influenced and shaped modern Canadian political thought on federalism, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the operation of democracy and the rights of Aboriginal peoples.
