Elizabeth Agnes Emily (Bettye) Bongie – Professor Emeritus Bongie passed away on, May 18, 2013. In 1956, she was the first woman to be appointed to a tenure-track position in the Department of Classical, Near Eastern, and Religious Studies, where she was very involved with the Medieval Studies Program. Bettye retired in 1992, after a long and distinguished teaching career, which included a Master Teaching Award.
