On February April 9, 2020 the University of British Columbia (UBC) invites you to attend a public event hosted by Santa J. Ono, President and Vice-Chancellor, with students, faculty, staff and the community to launch the Indigenous Strategic Plan for UBC Vancouver and UBC Okanagan at the Vancouver campus.

The renewed Indigenous Strategic Plan has been in progress since 2017, and will form UBC’s response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls’ Calls for Justice, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. To the best of our knowledge, UBC is the first university in North America, and possibly the world, to endorse the UN Declaration.
The vision and mission of the Indigenous Strategic Plan has already been adopted by the UBC Board of Governors and is as follows:
UBC as the leading university globally in implementation of Indigenous peoples’ human rights, as articulated in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and other international human rights law.
To guide UBC’s engagement with Indigenous peoples and its commitment to reconciliation, as articulated and called for by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
The 38-page draft Indigenous Strategic Plan, which continues the work of the 2009 Aboriginal Strategic Plan, has been posted online since June 2018. From this point, the Indigenous Strategic Planning Team has been engaged in a planning process to produce a final action plan, which will provide clear, implementable steps to enhance Indigenous engagement at UBC Vancouver, while also providing an overarching UBC-wide plan to be implemented across both campuses. This plan intends to build upon UBC Okanagan’s recent Declaration of Truth and Reconciliation Commitments. In fact, the UBC-wide strategy will look to integrate UBCO’s current commitments while recognizing the unique contexts and strengths of each campus.

Accessibility Shuttle
The accessibility shuttle will be running and can be pre-booked through their website, for arrival or return trips. Shuttle stop #13 is near the event site. See shuttle stop map for all stops.
Charter or Private Bus Transportation
Passenger drop off and pick up area is located in the fire lane lay-by located at the base of Student Union Boulevard, Vancouver BC – see event map. All charter buses must temporarily stop on the embankment in order to keep Student Union Blvd. clear for transit and traffic. It is important to not park or leave the bus unattended while in this spot.
Buses are to be stationed at the Museum of Anthropology over the course of the event.
